Whether you're a regular reader or found this blog post because you need last-minute help, there is something useful for everyone to take away!
You're the host of a last-minute Thanksgiving gathering, now what? First identify where you are going to entertain and feed your guests. At my home, it is typically my open floor plan dining and living room. Once you identify the space, think how you will feed your guests in that space. Can you seat them all at a table? Then an intimate seated dinner will be perfect! Standing room only? Serve guests bites they easily enjoy without much fuss.
On to the menu (my favorite part). Usually there is one dish I know I want to make and from that dish I select delicious simple things to accompany it always keeping in mind the diets of my guests so there is something for everyone. If you are unsure what to serve Google topics like simple Thanksgiving appetizer, side dish, or cocktail. The internet is rich with food sites and blogs focused on recipes. Select a handful that fit the theme of your menu. Bonus points for quick and easy recipes! No time to cook? Contact your favorite grocery store or restaurant, many offer complete or ala carte meals you can pick up ahead of time during the holidays.
By now you have established where you'll host your guests and what they will dine on. Serving pieces and dinnerware can range from the heirloom dishes you only pull out for special occasions to easy yet elegant disposable pieces. Take a moment to think on what preparations you want to put into the presentation of your dishes and what you’re willing to clean when the gathering is over. I usually marry traditional serving pieces with theme appropriate disposables because dirty dishes are my enemy. Amazon is my go-to for its large selection of party supplies that arrive quickly and with minimal effort on my part. Notice a theme here? When the party is over I don't want to spend more time cleaning than I did celebrating!
Your almost there, now make a list and check it twice. I'm not Santa, but I have been saved by my lists too many times to count when getting ready for guests. Make a note of what housework needs to be done, your complete menu down to drinks, the times you need to start cooking and/or plate your dishes up until you need to get ready for guests to arrive.
Add final touches like flower arrangements, flickering candles, low mood music, and a signature cocktail, and you are well on your way to a successful gathering! I hope this blog post helps you no matter what occasion you are planning for.
Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving 2021!
Xoxo, Grace
